Harry Anderson, star of sitcom 'Night Court,' found dead in NC home

'Night Court' Star Harry Anderson Dead at 65

John Larroquette, Markie Post, Richard Moll, Charles Robinson and Marsha Warfield starred alongside Mr. Anderson.

Anderson became a household name in the U.S. as he played Judge Harry T. Stone on sitcom Night Court that ran from 1984 to 1992. Mr. Anderson was a eulogist at Mr. Tormé's funeral in 1999.

Anderson grew up not necessarily wanting to be an actor, but a magician.

Although he had a long television career, Anderson said he never came to consider himself an actor. "I was a magician who fell into a part on 'Cheers'". Following an appearance on Saturday Night Live, Anderson got a guest spot on Cheers, which led to the role of Judge Harry T. Stone on Night Court.

Even Harry the Hat echoed Mr. Anderson's real life.

Anderson, a Newport native, was 65.

Anderson also infamously aired his grievances about living in New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, with the re-election of Ray Nagin as mayor of New Orleans among them.

Anderson is survived by two children from his first marriage to Leslie Pollack, and by his current wife Elizabeth Morgan. Information about other survivors was not immediately available. That role in turn led him to the role of Harry Stone on Night Court, a goofy judge in a Manhattan night court who had a fondness for magic and a love of Mel Torme's music. He hosted the show at the height of his fame, in 1985. He also starred in the 1990s sitcom "Dave's World", based on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry.

Anderson had a devoted following among fellow performers. He grew up in NY and moved to OR when he was a teenager and said that's where he became a hippie.

Anderson has said he never sought to be an actor.

A People magazine story in 2002 said Anderson disappeared from Hollywood and resurfaced as the owner of a New Orleans magic shop. He also had a nightclub in the French Quarter called Oswald's Speakeasy. "I can settle back and do what I want to do".
