Many child-oriented apps potentially violate US' child privacy law

In an attempt to not be suspended from Google's services, Unlockd has taken out an injunction against the online advertising giant in the UK High Court and is threatening to report the company for uncompetitive behaviour to various competition regulators including the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the US Federal Trade Commission and the European Commissioner for Competition.

Google Play is full of Android apps that track kids' online activity, thus violating the USA privacy laws such as COPPA, claims a survey from a team of university researchers and computer scientists, according to Gizmodo.

The study found thousands of kid-targeted apps were collecting data from the device, some including Global Positioning System location and personal information.

The researchers affiliated with the International Computer Science Institute were able to access "sensitive data protected by Android permissions" from 28 percent of tested apps on Google's virtual shop.

"Protecting kids and families is a top priority, and our Designed for Families program requires developers to abide by specific requirements above and beyond our standard Google Play policies", Google's statement reads. However, it is the first time that Palestinians have been targeted with Android spyware all thanks to a fake Facebook page. The findings also provide data about the relative number of devices that have a particular screen configuration, defined by a combination of screen size and density, which help developers to better design user interfaces for different screen configurations.

Fun Kid Racing alone has more than 10 million downloads, according to the app page.

"They're not expected to reverse engineer applications in order to make a decision whether or not it's safe for their kids to use", Egelman said. Facebook-integrated apps were breaking the law because they didn't protect users under 13 years of age.

Google did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation's request for comment in time of publication.

The study also looked at how the apps were transferring the data, and found that 40 percent of them failed to do it in a secure way.

Thousands of child-directed Android apps and games are potentially violating United States law on the collection and sharing of data on those under 13, research has revealed.

This not only includes name, usernames, and emails, but also geo-location data, IP addresses, and other identity markers that could be used to track children online and link them to advertising IDs.
