McKayla Maroney Says Larry Nassar Molested Her 'Every Time He Saw Me'

McKayla Maroney addresses a luncheon for a child abuse prevention organization Tuesday in New York

In October, Maroney was among the first high-profile gymnasts to publicly come forward and speak about Nassar's abuse. "All they cared about was money, medals and it didn't seem like anything else", Maroney said.

Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnast Jordyn Wieber sued Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics, the U.S. Olympic Committee and others Tuesday over alleged sexual abuse by team physician Larry Nassar. In her comments, she questioned whether her gymnastics career was even worth it. "Because of the stuff I'm dealing with now". "Sometimes you're just left in the dust, and you have to pick up the pieces of your life".

Wieber also said she talked with teammates Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney at the Karolyi Ranch about the treatment and "how uncomfortable it made us feel".

Nassar spent almost three decades at USA Gymnastics before being fired in 2015 after complaints about his behavior. He was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison for possession of child pornography in December as well. "I definitely see a future where athletes are safe and succeeding".

"We are doing everything possible to prevent abuse, and we hope everything we do going forward makes this very clear", USA Gymnastics said in a statement to Dateline. They shouldn't have to.

Wieber alleges that former USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny and former chairman Paul Parilla "failed to disclose and hid former Olympic Team and MSU team doctor Nassar's criminal conduct from the public and law enforcement by virtue of defendants' conspiratorial and fraudulent conduct". They don't build champions. "But we're changing that".

The former USA Gymnastics team doctor was convicted of multiple sex crimes past year. She also chastised Michigan State officials who she said have turned victims away and are "still refusing to admit what the problem is and that they're accountable for it".

Maroney, now 22, won gold and silver at the 2012 Olympics as part of the USA Gymnastics team known as the "Fierce Five". The abuse continued at the Olympics and stopped only when she left the sport, Maroney said previous year. In December, 2016 she reached a settlement with USA Gymnastics after suffering "years of psychological trauma".

Whatever the legal fallout, Maroney is intent on picking up the pieces and moving on. And the one thing gymnastics did teach me was: "when you fall, you gotta get back up". "We can't give up on ending sexual abuse".
