United Kingdom and USA alert about "malicious cyber activity" by Russian Federation

British Prime Minister Theresa May is facing a huge public backlash after bombing Syria without the backing of Parliament

According to the NCSC, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the DHS, state-sponsored Russian hackers have targeted network devices inside government organisations, private industry and critical infrastructure operators, and even those within small and home offices. Rather, it is part of a broader ongoing effort by the USA government to call out bad behaviour in cyberspace and impose costs as a deterrent.

While the United Kingdom and U.S. have been quick to point fingers in the direction of the Kremlin, the Russia Embassy has denied any involvement and has slammed the "accusations" as "striking examples of a reckless, provocative and unfounded policy against Russia".

"This attempt by Russian Federation is a sharp reminder that Australian businesses and individuals are constantly targeted by malicious state and non-state actors, and we must maintain rigorous cyber security practices", he added.

The aim seems to be to "seize control" of the machines that connect networks to the internet, and in the case of internet providers, to gain access to their customers, for espionage or other purposes, he said.

Ciaran Martin, chief executive of Britain's National Cyber Security Center, said Russian Federation had targeted "millions" of devices in both countries, often seeking to hack into individual homes or small businesses or to control their routers.

"The U.S. Government assesses that cyber actors supported by the Russian government carried out this worldwide campaign", the statement concludes. "We are pushing back and we are pushing back hard", he said.

"What the Russians have been doing is scanning the internet to see what vulnerable routers are out there", says CNET reporter Alfred Ng.

White House cyber security coordinator Rob Joyce said: "Once you own the router, you own all the traffic to include the ability to harvest credentials and passwords and essentially monitor all the traffic".

The Australian government has indicated that the attacks targeted network infrastructure devices such as routers, switches and firewalls, including Cisco networking gear.

Ciaran Martin, CEO of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, called it "a very significant moment as we hold Russian Federation to account and we improve our cyber defenses at the same time".

The cyber security experts found out that lately, Russian hackers have been using network tools to spy or plan future hacker attacks.
