Japanese clerk calls work for day off after winning Boston Marathon

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

Not even when she qualified for Boston after winning the Huntsville Marathon last September in Utah in 2:44:27.

A Kenya native and American citizen, Biwott spent his high school and early college years in Albuquerque, N.M., before becoming an All-American at the University of OR in Eugene, aka TrackTown USA.

"I loved running my whole life, but being injured, I think, took it to a whole other level because as soon as something's taken away from you it's like the only thing you want", said Sellers. Linden spent the last few weeks of her training block in northern MI, where cold and rainy temperatures were the norm, but vastly different from the bulk of her work at altitude and warmth in Arizona. She was also twice named as the Weber State Female Athlete of the Year.

In women's event, the 34-year-old Linden finally got her job done after her second-place finish at the 2011 edition.

"I think I'm going to wake up and this will be a dream", Sellers said of her race.

In two years, Sarah will go to the qualifier for the Olympic trials, the top three runners from that marathon will earn a place on the Olympic team. She was the ninth-fastest runner in Monday's field, based on the personal best of 2:22:38 she ran in Boston in 2011. You obviously don't know her.

"I had no anticipations of winning $75,000", she told the Globe.

"What!?" her brother says from behind the computer Sarah is giving us an interview from.

"My brother Ryan, he chose to sign up for it last fall, so I thought it'd be cool to come out and run it", said Sellers.

For elite runners and weekend warriors alike, the race distance can be a bad barometer. Linden won the slowest Boston since 1978. She will sometimes stick to a selected pace and become a human metronome all the way to the finish, with her first and second halves looking nearly identical. Because she never looked back, she never saw the carnage unfold as Daska and Chesir dropped out of the race.

Yuki Kawauchi's improbable victory at the Boston Marathon on Monday is the crowning glory in the career of an amateur Japanese runner who has defied every convention in modern athletics and taken the road less travelled to make his mark.

It was a big day for American women, who claimed seven of the top eight spots in the race. Michael Cordsen and Liz Byrnes of Paso Robles, Suzi Jianuzzi and Susan McAdoo of Templeton, Alison Borgsmiller of Santa Margarita and Amy Parkinson of San Luis Obispo all qualified this year for the historic race and completed the 26.2 mile course from the town of Hopkinton to the finish line at Copley Square.

"The last couple steps it was like 'Oh this is for real.'" Linden says.
