Syracuse Fraternity Suspended for 'Extremely Racist' Video

SU students speaking up in wake of offensive fraternity videos

An engineering fraternity at Syracuse University was suspended on Wednesday over a video the school chancellor called "extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and hostile to people with disabilities", according to the New York Times.

Syracuse University has suspended one of its fraternities after videos laden with offensive behavior were discovered online.

Before the Daily Orange published some of the videos Wednesday, students across campus demanded the release of the recordings. They chanted "release the video" and "we're exhausted of being sick and exhausted".

Chancellor Kent Syverud wrote in his campus-wide email: 'I am appalled and shaken by this and deeply concerned for all members of our community.

According to the Daily Orange, Theta Tau is the fourth fraternity to get suspended during the 2017-18 academic school year. It said the behaviors described were not representative of its "very diverse organization". On the outside, this situation appears as an isolated incident on campus, however students say otherwise.

Syverud said "upon confirming Theta Tau's involvement, the University's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities immediately suspended the fraternity, effectively halting all activities".

According to the statement, Syracuse's Department of Public Safety are now investigating the footage to identify members involved and are planning to seek additional legal and disciplinary actions against them.

Theta Tau is a national organisation that was founded in 1904.

The videos also include simulations of oral sex, masturbation, glory holes, and drug use, and cracking homophobic jokes: "Get together and [talk] about their significant others while drinking different wines and talking in gay girly accents!"

Theta Tau is not the first fraternity, nor Syracuse the first university, to be involved in a scandal involving racism or sexism. "All these racist, sexist frats - we don't need them", students chanted.

On Wednesday, students staged a protest outside the chancellor's house and then marched their way to the campus chapel.

Syverud said, "The conduct is deeply harmful and contrary to the values and community standards we expect of our students".

"Syracuse University is committed to fostering a community where all our students feel welcome and are treated with dignity and respect".
