Trump Attorney Drops Libel Lawsuits Against Fusion GPS, BuzzFeed

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's embattled legal fixer, has dropped libel lawsuits against BuzzFeed and a political research firm over the dossier that alleged collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.

"The decision to voluntarily discontinue these cases was a hard one", said Cohen attorney David Schwartz in a statement to POLITICO. "But given the events that have unfolded and the time, attention and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed th matters despite their merits".

Cohen sued BuzzFeed in January 2018, as iMediaEthics reported, over the site's Jan. 2017 publication of a dossier about Trump and Russian Federation. With those civil lawsuits ongoing in federal courts, it may also have been hard for Cohen to persuade a judge to postpone a suit that porn star Stormy Daniels filed against Trump over their alleged affair.

Steele wrote the dossier on behalf of Fusion GPS, an opposition research firm that investigated Trump on behalf of the Clinton campaign and DNC during the 2016 campaign. CNN reported that lawyers close to Trump warned that Cohen could flip and possibly wear a wire in exchange for a lenient deal.

Bon-Ton Stores looks headed to closure; future of local Carson's unclear
As the Business Journal pointed out, Reuters has reported that only liquidators have bid and that Bon-Ton will go out of business. He doubts that a single retailer will take over each of the spaces. "It might give (CBL) a chance to re-imagine the mall".

President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen departs following a closed door meeting with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill, Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, in Washington.

On a recent press gaggle aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters that he doesn't know where Cohen got the money or why he was moved to pay-off Daniels. McClatchy reported that special counsel Robert Mueller has received evidence that Cohen did visit Prague when the dossier claims he did.

In the suit, Cohen accused BuzzFeed News Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith of publishing the document "in spite of his awareness that the Dossier was. not meant to be part of public discourse or to make an argument in a public debate and that the Dossier's content also bore multiple hallmarks of its irresponsible collection and compilation". "We strongly believed that publishing the disputed document whose existence we and others were reporting was in the public interest". "With his decision, it appears that Mr. Cohen can now focus on his many other legal travails".

There was no immediate response on Thursday to a request for comment from his lawyers.
