Successive wins for Chelsea, draw not enough for Southampton

The forward had earlier missed two good opportunities to add to his 14 goals this season

Mark Hughes admits Southampton's Premier League relegation battle will be in the back of his mind during this Sunday's FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea. "A lot of times when you score it changes your confidence".

"The only way to keep a hope for us is to try to get three points in every game", said the Chelsea boss.

The win moved fifth-placed Chelsea to within five points of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Like the equaliser, the opener - an own goal by Kevin Long - may also have benefited from a huge slice of luck but it was still not more than Chelsea deserved for their first-half domination, and Conte's bold team selection.

Conte felt the striker's emotions were directed inwards, with just one league goal since December, and was happy with Morata's wider contribution.

David Luiz is likely to continue to miss out with a recurrence of the knee injury that he suffered last season in a high challenge with Sergio Aguero.

Conte praised the way his two strikers played together.

"I hear that we are already in the final, but if you remember, and I do very well, that five days ago we were 2-0 down against Southampton and we played a disaster against them", he said.

"We played with great spirit, we had a great desire and will to fight", Conte told reporters. Burnley hosted Chelsea in a battle for fifth place and pride.

The Stamford Bridge outfit claimed a 2-1 victory over Sean Dyche 's after manager Antonio Conte experimented a new formation which accommodates Giroud and Morata in the same lineup.

"So there were certainly no disappointments, we were playing a top side and we are getting closer".

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud is of the view that Alvaro Morata is not his rival at Chelsea but his teammate, according to Goal.

Despite the Blues romping to the Premier League title in his first year with the club, setting a Premier League record for most wins in a single season with 30 of 38, the Italian's second season has been more hard. One of the best ways to prepare for Sunday's sport was profitable.

The home team made Chelsea pay for that mistake when Ashley Barnes deflected Johann Berg Gudmundsson's long-range drive beyond goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the 64th minute.
