Democratic Party sues Russia, Trump campaign and WikiLeaks over 2016 email hack

DNC files federal lawsuit against Russia Trump campaign and associatesSHARE:sharetweetshareemail

Democrats filed the suit on Friday, alleging that Russian Federation, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks worked together to put US President Donald Trump in office.

Filed on Friday, the civil complaint accused Russian Federation and WikiLeaks of conspiring to influence the Republican's White House bid in favour of Trump. "Russian Federation then used this stolen information to advance its own interests; destabilizing the USA political environment, denigrating the Democratic presidential nominee, and supporting the campaign of Donald J. Trump, whose policies would benefit the Kremlin".

"Just heard the Campaign was sued by the Obstructionist Democrats", the president tweeted Friday.

In the Trump campaign, Russian Federation found a willing and active partner in this effort.

It also says a close Trump advisor, Roger Stone, appeared to have "advance knowledge" of plans by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks to disseminate some of the stolen information - as part of what the suit alleges was a wide-ranging illegal conspiracy to influence the election.

The suit was denounced at the time by Nixon's attorney general, John Mitchell, who called it a case of "sheer demagoguery" by the DNC.

The lawsuit said the conspiracy "inflicted profound damage upon the DNC", and added: "The conspiracy constituted an act of previously unimaginable treachery: the campaign of the presidential nominee of a major party in league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the presidency". That litigation is still in progress. Robert Mueller is probing possible Trump campaign links to what U.S. intelligence has concluded was an effort to tilt the 2016 vote in Trump's favour.

Despite support for the lawsuit from DNC Chairman Tom PerezThomas Edward PerezClinton's top five vice presidential picks Government social programs: "Triumph of hope over evidence Labor's "wasteful spending and mismanagement" at Workers" Comp MORE, it's already coming under fire from some Democratic lawmakers.

According to the Post, foreign countries are immune to most lawsuits filed in the U.S. The DNC was reportedly so low on funds for the 2016 election that it had to borrow money from the Clinton campaign. And certain claims in the lawsuit, he said, face statutory expiration dates. "I'm very concerned about the run-up to the midterm elections".

The hacking of the DNC has always been a sore spot for Democrats across the board since Clinton's loss in November 2016.

Wasserman Schultz confronted then-FBI Director James Comey a few months later, in January 2017 during a private briefing at the Capitol, accusing him of helping throw the election to Trump because of his handling of the Clinton email investigation. The DNC's lawyers could request documents related to the alleged collusion in the discovery phase of the trial, during which lawyers on both sides ask for material relevant to the suit. Obama expelled Russian diplomats and shuttered diplomatic compounds in December 2016.
