Amber Rudd grilled by MPs over Windrush scandal

Prime Minister Andrew Holness in discussion with British Prime Minister Theresa May in the United Kingdom. Holness was the leading voice for the Caribbean in calling for justice for the Windrush generation while in the UK recently

Her admissions to the Commons home affairs select committee will raise further questions about her grip on the Home Office. "I was not going to say anything, but the Prime Minister quoted me, let me say to the prime minister: Do not try to hide behind me or the Labour Party when she was warned repeatedly the damage her obsession with her net migration target was doing", the Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford MP said.

Asked if she had told May to ditch the target, Rudd said: "I have not discussed that with the prime minister".

'It's wrong to think the net migration target is the problem here.

During exchanges at Prime Minister's questions, Mrs May insisted the Government was committed to ensuring those who were entitled to be in the United Kingdom were able to remain, but said it was right to clamp down on illegal immigration. "Isn't it time she took responsibility and resigned?" he said. "I didn't see it as a systemic issue until very recently", she added.

The Home Secretary told MPs that hitting a total number of people to be deported from the United Kingdom was not how the department operates.

"I didn't hear the testimony and I'm not sure what shape that might be in, but if you ask me 'are there numbers of people we expect to be removed?', that's not how we operate".

Yvette Cooper, the chair of the committee, said MPs had been told Home Office officials did have removal targets.

The Windrush cases - which include anyone who moved to the United Kingdom from a Commonwealth country before 1973 - are in the United Kingdom legally but some have been threatened with deportation if they did not have paperwork to prove it.

On Monday, the Home Secretary sought to draw a line under the scandal by promising to grant citizenship and compensation to the families of Caribbean immigrants who came to the United Kingdom between 1948 and 1971.

"If there are removals targets in the Home Office and the two people who supposedly in charge don't know about them, that feels pretty serious", she said. Ms Rudd, who has faced calls to resign, told MPs that she became aware of the "potential issue" over the past three or four months as individual cases emerged.

It was also announced that financial compensation will be given to members of the Windrush Generation negatively affected by enforcement of the earlier change in immigration policy and that the British knowledge and language tests usually applicable to citizenship applications would not be required.
