Alek Minassian Toronto van attack suspect praised 'incel' killer

Emergency responders are on scene after a white van reportedly struck pedestrians along Yonge Street near Finch Avenue in Toronto

Ten people were killed and 14 injured when a rental van swerved onto the Yonge Street sidewalk in Toronto on April 23, mowing down pedestrians.

The Jordanian embassy in Ottawa has told the BBC that one of its citizens was among the victims.

"As you can imagine, the investigation is incredibly detailed and on-going and because the accused has been charged, I'm limited from discussing any evidence involved in the investigation, including any questions pertaining to motive", says Gibson.

He said the constable's actions are a sign that police are gaining from training that includes simulations of tense standoffs with people who are emotionally unstable.

Investigators are also looking at a Facebook post, allegedly made by Minassian, that praises Elliot Rodger, who killed six people and then himself at the University of California in 2014.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the victims of the van attack. We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys! A 14th count of attempted murder was pending after the toll of injured was revised down.

One was an 80-year-old grandmother, Dorothy Sewell, who loved Toronto sports teams almost as much as her own family, a grandson said.

As Canadians try to make sense of the tragedy, Toronto is rallying.

The gender issue arose because of what police called a "cryptic" Facebook message posted by Minassian just before the incident that suggested he was part of an online community angry over their inability to form relationships with women.

D'Amico was identified as one of the 10 killed in the van attack.

.

He attended a school for students with special needs in north Toronto, former classmates say. And Jordan's state-run Petra news agency said one of that country's citizens, Munair Najjar, who was in Toronto visiting relatives, also died in the attack. The Canadian Department of National Defense said in a statement that Minassian joined the armed forces on August 23 of past year and quit two months later, after 16 days of basic training.

Two unidentified Korean nationals and an unnamed student from Seneca College were also killed.

Because they did not have a support base, they had stirred up unrest in a bid to hold up the elections, he alleged. The court said that the commission would lie in contempt if the order was not executed.

D'Amico volunteered at a Canada-based global humanitarian charity called Live Different and helped build houses in the Dominican Republic in 2015 and 2017, according to Dave Hamilton, the charity's manager of school partnerships.

While officials remained mum on the identities of the 10 people killed after a van mounted a sidewalk along bustling Yonge street, some who knew the victims released details of the individuals who lost their lives Monday afternoon.

"She was a really friendly, warm person ... always caring for other people ahead of herself", he said.

She was an alumnus of Ryerson's Ted Rogers School of Management.

In his first court appearance, Alek Minassian, 25, stood in the dock, wearing a white prison jumpsuit, his head shaved and his arms behind his back.

But authorities said the incident during the busy lunch hour Monday was undoubtedly deliberate.

He says he saw a "white van speeding probably 60-70mph down this major road, swerving to deliberately hit pedestrians and avoid traffic before careering off into a side street and out of view".

He did not enter a plea to the charges and was ordered to return to court on May 10.

"If you take guns out of the mix, Canada and the United States are identical, " she said, citing statistics indicating the two countries have similar rates of non-firearm homicides.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the nation said today "we can not live in fear" while USA president Donald Trump extended his condolences to Canadians over the deadly attack. "I had the privilege of being around her for many years and never did I see her down or sad, [she was] usually the one that was lifting people up to find their best and be their best". But, he added: "We must not start living in fear and uncertainty every day as we go about our daily lives".

Trudeau says the incident "hasn't changed the overall threat level in Canada", though it occurred as Cabinet ministers from the G7 nations are meeting in Toronto. "We need to focus on doing what we can, we must, to keep Canadians safe, while we stay true to the freedoms and values that we all as Canadians hold dear".
