Kim Jong Un crosses border into South Korea for historic summit

The meeting will be only the third of its kind, following summits in Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007, and the high point so far of a rapid diplomatic rapprochement on the tension-wracked peninsula, ahead of a much-anticipated meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump. "If the United States is going to call for the abandonment of nuclear weapons, they will need to conclude a peace treaty, and normalize relations between North Korea and the U.S.". He will, however, remain within the Demilitarised Zone.

Revere said he was one of the "many skeptics" who were not holding their breath for many concessions by North Korea on their nuclear program.

Thus today's meeting is not a result of efforts from these two leaders alone, but the entire global community through the United Nations.

The historic meeting will focus on the North's recent indications it could be willing to give up its nuclear weapons. Kim's regime is on the cusp of developing a missile capable of striking any United States city with one of his estimated 60 nuclear bombs.

Last week, the country announced that they would be suspending nuclear and missile testing, as well as closing a nuclear test site.

As well as addressing Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, the leaders are expected to discuss a path to peace on the peninsula to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, and a series of economic and social issues.

"I was excited to meet at this historic place and it is really moving that you came all the way to the demarcation line to greet me in person", Kim said as he grasped Moon's hand across the border.

It was all smiles as Mr Moon grasped Mr Kim's hand and led him along a red carpet into South Korean territory, where school children placed flowers around their necks and an honour guard stood at attention.

North Korea's Kim Jong-un signs the guest book.

After a morning session lasting an hour and 40 minutes, Kim crossed back to the North for lunch, a dozen security guards jogging alongside his limousine.

A pine tree will be planted on the demarcation line to symbolise "peace and prosperity", using soil from Mount Paektu in North Korea and Mount Halla in South Korea.

They could also signal a mechanism for future talks on nuclear inspections and sanctions relief, two areas that have prompted previous negotiations to collapse. The leaders also plan to sign agreements before a banquet, and may even hold a joint press appearance.

Kim Yo Jong has emerged as the most visible member of Kim Jong Un's regime after her brother — since she became the first member of the ruling North Korean family to travel to the South in early February for the Olympics. ASEAN has long advocated for dialogue and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea normally expresses anger toward defectors and often accuses South Korea of abducting or enticing its citizens to defect. Later, they will have dinner on the South's side and watch a video clip themed "Spring of One", he added.

Kim will be accompanied by nine officials, including his sister, Kim Yo Jong, and North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong Jam.

Kim surprised many by inviting Moon to briefly cross the inter-Korean border to the North Korean side, which South Korean officials said was not pre-arranged.

"They spoke, and [Pompeo] also spoke with his counterparts in North Korea".

South Korea's delegation is made up of seven officials, including the ministers of defence, foreign affairs and unification.

"First is a commitment to improve inter-Korean relations".
