Dolphins nab Penn State's Gesicki in NFL Draft's 2nd round

Miami Dolphins select TE Mike Gesicki with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft

The former Falcon High School and Arizona State star running back was selected Saturday in the fourth round of the National Football League draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Gesicki went on to record 129 receptions, 1,481 yards and 15 touchdowns in his four-year career at Penn State and he credits his athleticism for his college production.

Gesicki became the second tight end selected in the draft when the Dolphins took him Friday with the 10th pick in the second round, the 42nd overall selection.

And then there was Mike Mayock's take on Gesicki's blocking, which is not great: "He is not a point-of-attack tight end in the run game".

"We're thrilled with the red zone possibilities, and he's a hard matchup for people, being that big and athletic", Grier said.

Gesicki is projected start for the Dolphins ahead of returnees MarQueis Gray, A.J. Derby and Thomas Duarte and newcomer Gavin Escobar.

His success came in his junior and senior seasons after a hard sophomore year where he struggled with drops.

Draft analysts have been high on the defensive back for a while now after he showed the ability to play every position in Nick Saban's secondary, but there's no consensus on which position he'll play in the NFL.

Earlier this week Gesicki joined fellow Nittany Lions, Saquon Barkley and DaeSean Hamilton as Nike athletes. Hamilton is likely the next off the board for Penn State with a host of other players not far behind. Jason Cabinda, Grant Haley, Troy Apke, Brendan Mahon and Saeed Blacknall have also appeared in mock drafts.
