Mosque bomb attack kills 20 in Nigeria

Mubi resident Abdullahi Labaran said the first bomber mingled with worshippers who had gathered for prayers at the mosque at the edge of the market

Recall that at least 60 people were on Tuesday killed in twin suicide blasts in Mubi, Adamawa state, according to residents in the area.

They were transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yola for treatment. "More bodies were being brought by families of the victims", said Muhammad Hamidu.

No group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's carnage but many believe Boko Haram to be behind it.

The government has said since December 2015 that Boko Haram has been defeated.

In recent months, Boko Haram activity has been concentrated in the far north of Adamawa state, around Madagali, near the border with Borno state.

The blasts bore the hallmarks of Islamist militant group Boko Haram and follow Thursday's attack by the jihadist group on Maiduguri, the capital of neighbouring Borno state, which killed four people. The blasts come a day after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari met United States President Donald Trump and discussed the threat that the terror group poses in the region.

In Mubi, local volunteer Habu Saleh, who was involved in the rescue effort, described the aftermath of the bombing as "chaos".

Our correspondent gathered that apart from the scores of people believed to have someone the incident, many are in critical conditions and are being attended to at the hospital.

Abdullahi Yerima, police commissioner in Adamawa state, said a suicide bomber struck at the mosque at around 01:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) and a second bomber detonated a device some 200 metres (220 yards) away as worshippers fled.

He detonated his explosives "five minutes before the prayer started", he added.

There was a suicide attack last November on a mosque at Kunu Araha, a northern suburb of Mubi, which also killed dozens of woshippers. "This is obviously the work of Boko Haram", he said.
