Apple's Siri Gives NSFW Answer When Asked to Define 'Mother'

Asking Siri to define the word "mother" is simple enough, and it fetches the standard Oxford Dictionary definition, which refers to a woman in relation to her child or children, or a female animal in relation to her offspring.

"As a noun", Siri said, "it means, short for 'motherf***er'".

Then Siri will inform you that mother can be shorthand for "motherf--", a definition that counts as "vulgar slang".

The reply did not go well with many users who slammed the voice assistant for coming up with such a response.

While Siri is certainly an advanced utility that can anticipate your whims and find information on pretty much anything, any sort of artificial intelligence is built with some flaws - even for the most advanced sort of technology. Also, it is stated in the dictionary that the word is of vulgar slang.

"The weirdest part is the fact that Siri is such a prude when you swear at her", wrote one commenter.

What is odd about the way in which Siri handles this request is that it completely bypasses some far-more-commonly used secondary definitions for mother and skips right to the fourth definition which is pretty vulgar. But "mother" has different meanings, and as such, Siri prompts the user if they want to read the next result. Maybe Apple should release an option that allows Siri to use curse words whenever it provides an answer or gives a response. Case in point - scores of people have begun asking it to define the word mother.

For those unaware, Siri is a built-in "intelligent assistant" that enables users of Apple iPhone 4S and later and newer iPad and iPod Touch devices to speak natural language voice commands in order to operate the mobile device and its apps.
