Trump makes it clear that Pompeo is his man at State

The former CIA chief received a standing ovation

He also said President Donald Trump, along with most of his Cabinet, would visit the State Department on Wednesday for his formal swearing in ceremony, which would be Trump's first visit to the State Department despite being in the White House for more than 15 months.

It's a particularly crucial message to send as the coming month will be fraught with both risk and opportunity for the administration and the newly minted secretary of state.

As he began his opening remarks, Trump noted the applause, saying, "I must say that's more spirit than I've heard from the State Department in a long time".

President Trump paid his first official visit to State headquarters to attend the ceremony. We're in the beginning stages of the work and the outcome is certainly yet unknown. "I'll speak to the entire work force, I'll lay out for you my expectations and my hopes, and most importantly, share with you my leadership style". Pompeo was chosen after his predecessor, Rex Tillerson, was sacked by Trump in March after months of disagreements with the president.

The new secretary of state's urgency to take up the Iran issue indicated how aggressively the Trump-Pompeo duo is going to conduct Washington's foreign policy.

New US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo fist bumps with a woman upon his arrival for his first day at the State Department, May 1, 2018. As he gestured to Pompeo, he added that "that spirit will only be magnified with this man right here".

Pompeo had made a secret visit to North Korea during the Easter holidays as the Central Intelligence Agency director to meet its leader Kim Jong-un to pave the way for Trump's much-awaited meeting with Kim in another few weeks over North Korea's denuclearisation.

When it was his turn to address the crowd on Wednesday, Pompeo spoke of the "truly humbling" honor of leading the State Department, praising career diplomats and agency personnel, whom he described as the "world's finest diplomatic corps".

"I'll have more to say in the days and weeks ahead about how we will get our swagger back and serve productivity on behalf of America", he wrote.

Pompeo spoke of the threats posed by Iran and Russian Federation - as well as the economic threat posed by China - in his opening remarks.

Pompeo stated that Ukraine expected action, after which the government will be able to offer membership in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Trump and Pence made the short trek to Foggy Bottom on Wednesday morning for a ceremonial swearing-in of Trump's second secretary of State.

"We're in wait and see mode, but for now ... we'll take it", says one source of Pompeo.

"I have a great deal to learn about the State Department and how we perform our mission", he said of the State Department, which has 74,000 employees, two-thirds of them working outside the United States.

"There is a real desire to connect with this guy, and he is connecting", the senior official said.
