Tesla Model Y SUV production rescheduled for 2020

Elon Musk calls out Tesla skeptics in a tweetstorm 2 days after his confrontational earnings call

Tesla's stock price tumbled in after-hours trading during the investor call.

Continuing to offer his side of the story, Musk explained why he called the questions from Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi and RBC Capital Markets analyst Joseph Spak "boring" and "dry".

As for whether this is the last of Musk's unusual behavior, that seems unlikely.

As for the Model 3 reservations question, he described that as "absurd" on Twitter. The SUV crossover will likely be produced at a new factory that would be announced towards the end of this year.

Later, he said moats are lame, that his company "is a leaky sieve of information" and that Tesla's pickup is going to be great: "We have way more cool things than we know what to do". The controversial driving assist feature has played both the role of scapegoat and cause of crashes involving Tesla vehicles.

As NPR's Sonari Glinton reports, investors are getting nervous about the production delays in Tesla's most affordable model, and the company's stock has been volatile. RBC Capital's Joseph Spak then asked about how many Model 3 reservations had been converted into orders for the electric auto. He added that the Model Y production would start a "manufacturing revolution", without elaborating on what kind of revolution it would be.

The California company is still struggling to ramp up the Model 3 production, for which it has received almost 500,000 pre-orders. Tesla will undergo "a sort of reorganization, restructuring" this month to help achieve that goal, he said. The EV maker claims it doesn't need to raise more funds for capital expenditures.

Tesla has relied on the capital markets to finance its grand ambitions, and many believe the company has burned so much cash that it will soon need to turn to Wall Street for more.

Just after the electric auto and solar panel company announced a record first-quarter loss, the Tesla CEO cut off two analysts who sought some basic answers: details about the company's cash needs and orders for its all-important Model 3 mass-market electric vehicle. With management's past failures regarding cash flow and profitability, many are skeptical that Tesla will hit its targets for the second half of the year.

CNBC also reports that Musk made a decision to take several questions from a 25-year-old retail investor and owner of a YouTube channel, Galileo Russell, which is unusual because questions on earnings calls are traditionally reserved for analysts, professional investors, and sometimes media. A net profit is likely by the third quarter, he said.
