Iowa Just Banned Abortions For Any Baby With A Heartbeat

Iowa abortion bill hailed and assailed

Kim Reynolds speaks during a news conference as acting Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg, left, looks on during the opening day of the Iowa Legislature at the Statehouse in Des Moines, Iowa. She was also there protesting a House budget bill that denies Planned Parenthood from applying for state-issued grant funding that finances its sexual education program. If a heartbeat is detected, the abortion would be prohibited except in cases involving medical emergency, rape, incest or fetal abnormalities deemed to be "incompatible" with life.

"This is bigger than just a law, this is about life, and I'm not going to back down", she said.

"We have stomped on women's rights to make their own healthcare decision, and in my opinion, it is being used as a bargaining chip to shut the place down", Representative Jo Oldson (D-Iowa) says.

In Iowa, the same Republican-majority Legislature passed a 20-week abortion ban previous year.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland will be suing the state over the bill.

The bill would require abortion practitioners to test for the unborn baby's heartbeat before performing an abortion.

A woman who is raped must report the rape "to a law enforcement agency, a public or private health agency or a family physician within 45 days". Those who find themselves pregnant because of incest would have a period of 140 days to report the situation in order to be allowed an abortion. The ban is set to go into effect on July 1. The lawmakers believe the case would provide an opportunity for the conservative-leaning court to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Because of the current make-up of the U.S. Supreme Court and lower courts, a law to prohibit abortions in the first trimester most likely would not survive a court challenge.

A similar court challenge is under way in Kentucky, which in April enacted a ban on a common abortion procedure from the 11th week of pregnancy.

Abortion rights supporters in Iowa and throughout the nation condemned the measure as unconstitutional and an affront to the rights of women. People will not stand for it, and we will not stand for it.

"The bold pro-life action taken by the Iowa legislature reflects growing national pro-life sentiment and restlessness under the extreme status quo imposed by Roe v. Wade", Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List said in a statement. Now is the time for us to unite and fight for every person's right to access the care they need.
