Manchester United fans tear into defender after Brighton loss: "Woeful", "Awful"

Chris Hughton says his Brighton side have had a 'normal' season in the Premier League for a promoted club

Brighton captain Bruno hailed the Amex fans after victory over Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho's side are nearly certain to finish second in the league table, but the manager was still frustrated with the disappointing display from his players at the Amex.

They were both in the XI against Brighton with injuries ruling out Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez but, according to the United manager, did not do enough.

The Red Devils will have been looking to build momentum ahead of their FA Cup clash with Chelsea towards the end of the month, however, they were on the end of a huge upset.

The second-half began with Brighton showing more urgency and the Seagulls were rewarded for their efforts when Pascal Gross arrived into the box at the right time to head home in the 57th minute.

The loss completed a hat-trick of defeats to the three newly promoted teams (Huddersfield, Newcastle, and Brighton). My players if you ask them I told them what was going to happen.

United should still finish second in the league but should we perform in the same manner in the final two games of the season, Spurs and Liverpool could still overtake us.

"Overall, attitude during the first half they were obviously stronger than us with more appetite, they felt it with different emotions", Mourinho said of Brighton's energetic performance.

"We had the target to get the points to finish second, and they showed that for them it is more important than for us to finish second".

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly aiming to bolster the club's midfield during the summer amid Michael Carrick's retirement and Marouane Fellaini's uncertain future at Old Trafford. "Maybe now you understand why some players play more than others and you don't ask why A, B or C don't play more", said Mourinho. Brighton won the game 1-0 which guaranteed their safety in the Premier League. Why always Lukaku? You have the answer why always Lukaku. "Even before Christmas, I had doubts about whether they would be able to do it and they deserve to celebrate tonight".

Prior to the match, Chris Hughton needed three points from their remaining three games to secure Premier League survival.
