Photo of Pakistani girl stirs controversy in India

Promoting'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao in Bihar

A Pakistani girl's photograph has been published on the notebook of Bihar's school in a move to promote "Swachh Jamui Swasth Jamui" and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' in state's Jamui district.

Noteworthy, the girl is also seen painting the Pakistani flag in the photograph. "Initial investigation revealed that the photograph was used by the UNICEF and some other organisations in Pakistan for female literacy campaigns".

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an inquiry after discovering that a photo of a Pakistani girl was used on the cover page of a booklet on cleanliness, as reported by the Hindustan times.

The incident that came to light on Friday and apparently didn't go down well across various spheres. The Patna-based printing press - Suprabh Enterprises has denied the charges.

DM Kumar said the district water and sanitation committee (DWSC) was responsible for devising ways and means to promote such government initiatives.

The error seems to have slipped by and a probe has been ordered to ascertain how the photograph got printed on about 5,000 booklets that were distributed to schoolchildren past year. Its representative Shailesh said the printing matter was approved by the district administration.

Niranjan Chawdhary, an official of the district rural development organisation, said that authorities were clueless about how the printer chose to feature the Pakistani girl on the front page.

On Saturday, the CM took cognisance of the matter and ordered Jamui district magistrate (DM) Dharmendra Kumar to conduct a detailed probe.
