Afghanistan: Seven Indians abducted in Baghlan, Taliban hand suspected

The latest assault is likely to deter more people from signing up for the long-delayed parliamentary and district council elections scheduled for October 20.

India is in touch with Afghanistan authorities after seven Indian engineers working in the country were abducted on May 6, a spokesman for Indian External Affairs Ministry said, BBC reported.

Police told reporters in Kabul that the Indians and their Afghan driver were travelling to a government-run power station in a mini-bus when unknown gunmen abducted them.

Indian officials on Sunday said they were aware of the abduction of Indian nationals in Afghanistan.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

He said the blast appeared to have been caused by explosives left in the mosque rather than by a suicide bomber.

Habib Shah Ansari, head of the Khost health department says 17 are confirmed dead. The group's spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, however, gave a conflicting casualty figure.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a vehicle carrying shopkeepers on their way to a market struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan's northern Faryab province, killing seven of them.
