China and USA clash over Taiwan directive to airlines

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in Beijing

"In the meantime, we have to point out that foreign enterprises operating in China should respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, abide by China's law and respect the national sentiment of the Chinese people".

Beijing has refuted a White House accusation that China has imposed political correctness on U.S. firms, saying that foreign companies in China should respect the country's law.

Hong Kong, a British colony until 1997, and Macau, a Portuguese colony until 1999, are now "special administrative regions" of China.

On April 25, China sent a letter to 36 foreign airlines, including a number of American, German, and Malaysian carriers to demand name changes for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on business websites, ordering them to avoid listing Taiwan as a country.

The Chinese government sent a threatening letter on April 25 to dozens of global airlines warning that they would face severe consequences if they failed to identify Taiwan as a part of China, according to The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the letter.

In Communist Party fashion, a Beijing spokesman responded to the White House statement saying: "No matter what the United States says, it can not change the objective fact that there is only one China in the world and that Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are indivisible parts of Chinese territory". "We call on all businesses to resist #China's efforts to mischaraterize #Taiwan", Tsai said Sunday on Twitter. The trade delegation was not received by Chinese President Xi Jinping or Vice President Wang Qishan, echoing Trump's decision to not meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He during his visit to Washington, DC, in March.

President Donald Trump "will stand up for Americans resisting efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies and citizens", a statement from the White House press secretary said.

China is threatening foreign airlines with a version of the social credit system that is being implemented domestically, where more than seven million Chinese citizens have been deemed "untrustworthy".

China's top diplomat, Mr Yang Jiechi, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday discussed bilateral ties by phone, with Mr Yang saying relations were at "an important stage", according to the Chinese foreign ministry. For example, America's Delta and Australia's Qantas have already changed their websites, according to CNN.

Bishop said she hoped the current understanding with China could continue and that her department would continue to liaise closely with Qantas.

Regulators ordered Marriott to close its China-based website and app for one week after criticizing the company for referring to Tibet and Taiwan as countries in a customer survey.
