All of the food collected in the Mon-Yough area stays in the Mon-Yough area, says Jarrell, a postal worker for 35 years before his retirement, with much of it being delivered to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for distribution to local food pantries.

To participate, residents should leave non-perishable food items, near their mailbox on the morning of Saturday May 12.

Organizers said canned food donations are need to restock the shelves more than ever before and the demand for food assistance typically increases in the summer. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons.

Volunteers from Farm Share and other local agencies will be organizing the donations from Stamp Out Hunger for distribution. For details on the North Coast food bank, call Gary White, Vineyard's pastor, at 805-927-5550.

Items most needed include canned meats, meat-based soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter and rice and beans.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. To contribute to the drive, all you have to do is fill it with non-perishable food items.

Letter carriers with the Arkansas Foodbank, U.S. "We are providing two meals a day, a snack and summertime are notoriously low for donations and so this food coming in is essential to what we need for feeding everyone who comes through the door". Last year's food drive netted almost 85,000 pounds of food locally. Along with the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, the National Association of Letter Carriers has collected more than one billion pounds of food nationally since the drive's inception.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive takes place Saturday, May 12.

The National Association of Letter Carriers hopes you will help combat hunger in the Tennessee Valley this weekend.

The Post Office is asking please no glass, no open containers, and no expired food.

"The food drive's timing is crucial", the press release stated.

In the quarter-century since it began, the annual food drive has collected nearly 1.6 billion pounds of food.
