Schneiderman falls: Republicans question what Cuomo, Dem powerbrokers knew of 'secrets'

Schneiderman's office was directed by Cuomo in March, 2018 to investigate the initial handling of sex assault allegations against Weinstein by the New York Police Department and the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

In a statement Monday night, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he doesn't believe it's possible for Eric Schneiderman to serve as attorney general.

Schneiderman's announcement late Monday came hours after The New Yorker published the accounts of four women, who accused the Democrat of physical violence. So he asked the legislature in Albany to amend the law and close what he called this "loophole". The New Yorker said it vetted the third woman's allegations, and saw a photo of what the fourth woman said was her injury.

Last month, he tweeted approvingly of the Pulitzer Prize awarded to The New York Times and The New Yorker for their reporting on sexual harassment: "Without the reporting of the @nytimes and the @newyorker-and the courageous women and men who spoke up about the sexual harassment they endured at the hands of powerful men-there would not be the critical national reckoning underway".

The details in the New Yorker report indeed hit the political world like a bomb, genuinely stunning many who have watched the attorney general's rise to top prosecutor and one of the country's most outspoken opponents to the Trump agenda. Kirsten Gillibrand, called for his resignation. "I have not assaulted anyone". An image provided to The New Yorker reportedly showed Schneiderman with a black eye and a bandage across the left side of his forehead. "This was assault they said over and over again".

In the decade since Eliot Spitzer resigned as governor amid reports he had solicited and slept with a prostitute, more than two dozen ny state legislators have stepped down or been convicted in a variety of corruption cases, including former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Schneiderman's spokesman denied the threats.

He showcased one of Schneiderman's tweets from a year ago saying that he would remind President Trump that no one was above the law, with Trump Jr. adding, "You were saying???"

The difference between someone like Trump and someone like Schneiderman is that Trump as publicly identified with men even as the #MeToo movement uncovers the difficulties women have faced.

The poll will pit the PML-N against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) led by former cricket star Imran Khan. Iqbal's son, Ahmad, told Geo News his father was conscious and out of danger after being airlifted to hospital.

"It just came out of nowhere", she said.

He said acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood, who he appointed, is competent and a "top-quality person" and that the office is not "rudderless". "She will provide good stewardship for the office and she's a total professional", he said.

"I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse", he said.

And in marking the 20th anniversary of the federal Violence Against Women Act in 2014, he noted that "violence against women remains a prevalent and risky problem across our nation".

Two of the women went on the record and said Schneiderman hit them without their consent and often after drinking.

Heastie and Brown said Tuesday they viewed diversity as an important criterion in selecting a candidate, while Cuomo echoed the sentiments of many seeking election of the state's first female attorney general.

The State Senate and State Assembly will choose a successor to fill the remainder of Schneiderman's term.
