Saudi Arabia threatens to build own nukes if Iran does

The United States by exiting the Iran nuclear agreement has now essentially outsourced USA foreign policy in the Middle East to both Israel and Saudi Arabia, analysts told Sputnik. But Trump can prove that he truly wants to prevent an arms race in the Middle East by insisting on specific provisions in the nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia that will make it harder for Riyadh to use its nuclear energy program for weapons purposes.

"This was a frightful one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made".

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies basked on Wednesday in what they saw as a political victory over Iran, after Washington withdrew from the worldwide nuclear accord with Tehran. "Last week, Israel published intelligence documents, long concealed by Iran, conclusively showing the Iranian regime and its history of pursuing nuclear weapons", Donald Trump said in White House remarks on May 8.

Oil-rich Saudi Arabia has long said it would match any Iranian weapons development, but Jubeir's renewed vow came after US President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of an accord created to prevent Tehran's alleged quest for the bomb. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the decision "courageous".

The renewed sanctions, aimed at the heart of the Iranian economy, will impact the country's energy, financial, and petrochemical sector. Global agencies responsible for inspecting compliance have said that Iran was in full cooperation with the agreement's terms.

Afghanistan: Seven Indians abducted in Baghlan, Taliban hand suspected
Explosion hits Khost mosque used as voter registration site, raising more security concerns about process ahead of poll. He said the blast appeared to have been caused by explosives left in the mosque rather than by a suicide bomber.

Former President Barrack Obama defended the agreement, writing the following in a statement published on his official Facebook page. The JCPOA is in America's interest - it has significantly rolled back Iran's nuclear program.

In a press statement, Saudi Arabia said that it welcomed the decision, claiming that Iran had "exploited" economic gains from the deal in order to "destabilize" the region. Under such a situation, Iran may decide that its main reason for joining the deal, namely economic recovery through foreign investments, can not be achieved, and withdraw from the deal.

Saudi Arabia is now pursuing a nuclear program for what it claims to be energy purposes.

Trump also reinstated United States sanctions which could curtail Iran's ability to export oil, its mainstay for public revenues.

But a drop in Iranian exports due to a return of US sanctions, plus involuntary supply losses in other OPEC members such as Venezuela, would mean the supply cut would be significantly larger than intended.
