Fed Up Homeland Security Chief Nearly Resigned After Trump Publicly Berated Her

The report said that Nielsen told several of her colleagues that she was considering resigning because the president berated her for failures in fulfilling his promises to seal the border against illegal alien crossings.

A senior administration official confirmed the incident to Reuters, saying: "He lit into her".

Trump lashed out at his Cabinet, and Nielsen in particular, when told that the number of people arrested for illegally crossing the Mexico border topped 50,000 for the second consecutive month. But Nielsen maintained her ground, citing the law in certain instances, the source said.

Following the release of the report, Nielsen said in a statement that Trump "is rightly frustrated" on border security issues.

When White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about the meeting, she responded simply, "the president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders".

"I just have to laugh at John Roberts discussion of his conversation with John Kelly, the chief of staff, because the White House is pushing back and DHS is pushing back on the notion that Secretary Nielsen was on the verge of quitting", Wallace remarked. "I share his frustration", she said in a statement.

As economy weakens, Bank of England holds off on rate hike
This fall in inflation was larger than predicted, further strengthening the case against the Bank of England upping rates in May. The preliminary estimate of GDP growth in the first quarter was 0.1%, 0.3 percentage points lower than expected in February.

During a rally in Elkhart, Indiana, Thursday evening, Trump complained, "We have the worst immigration laws in the history of mankind".

Homeland Security's deputy secretary position is vacant, so there would be no immediate replacement if Nielsen were to step down. In her written testimony for the Senate Judiciary Committee, Nielsen highlighted the need for asylum reform, and suggested that DHS "impose and enforce penalies for fraud" in credible fear interviews, the first step in the long, bureaucratic process of seeking asylum. He reminds staff that she was a "George W. Bush person" because of her previous tenure as a White House Homeland Security adviser.

Trump, who has grown increasingly frustrated by a spike in border apprehensions and legal setbacks, blamed Nielsen Wednesday for failing to do enough to stop them, according to people familiar with the exchange.

Those numbers have since risen to more normal levels, pro-immigration groups speculate, because illegal immigrants were initially stunned by the president's early messaging but are now disregarding it.

"You can't allow people to pour into our country like they're doing", Trump said. Arrests along the border with Mexico typically rise during springtime, when migrants seeking jobs on USA farms and ranches return for the summer growing season.
