ATTACK A knifeman has been shot dead after stabbing several people in Paris

One person has been killed in a knife attack in Paris with a further four wounded according to French officials.

The Islamic State group claimed the attacker as one of its "soldiers".

The knifeman shouted "Allahu akbar" as he attacked people in the Opera district, French prosecutors said.

An unidentified suspect carried outside a traumatic assault Saturday day at the 2nd Arrondissement of Paris, north of the Seine River, which ultimately led into two casualties, including the attacker.

"I salute on behalf of all French people the courage of the police officers who neutralized the terrorist", he added on Twitter.

The country has been on high alert amid a series of attacks, commissioned or inspired by the Islamic State militant group, over the past three years that has killed dozens of people.

The incident took place in Opera district of central Paris and the site was about 400 metres away from Paris Opera House.

Counterterrorism authorities took charge of the investigation, and President Emmanuel Macron vowed that France would not bow to extremists despite being the target of multiple deadly attacks in recent years.

"France has once again paid in blood, but will not give an inch to the enemies of freedom".

Paris police have confirmed that the assailant has been killed.

France's BFM tv interviewed an unnamed witness in a restaurant who stated a younger girl was on the entrance when "a person arrived and attacked her with a knife".

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb denounced "heinous act" and praised police "composure" and swift reaction to neutralise the attacker.

"The attacker entered a shopping street, I saw him with a knife in his hand", he said. He says his thoughts are with the victims.
