Rioters set fire to around 100 shops and 80 vehicles, the official said, adding that 37 persons have been arrested for rioting and arson since Friday night.

The clashes ensued between 2 groups after illegal water connection to a "religious place" was reportedly disconnected.

Among those injured were seven women and a dozen policemen, including an assistant commissioner of police.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was imposed across the city as law enforcement agencies struggled to maintain peace. "Few police officers and constables got injured during the clashes", Acting Commissioner and Special IG of Aurangabad Milind Bharambe said.

The condition of ACP Kolekar, who was admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the stone-pelting, is said to be serious.

While the actual reason behind the riots is yet to be ascertained, some reports indicate that the Aurangabad civic body, which embarked on a demolition drive of unauthorised tap connections, demolished one of the taps that belonged to a shrine. As the police authorities rushed to the spot of violence, the riot had erupted to its full extent and they couldn't control it, which led to the use to tear gas and plastic bullets. It escalated thanks to rumours as well as also the pressures spread...

Meanwhile, top police officials are camping in the city and have appealed for peace.

The worst-hit areas were Shahganj, Nawabpura, Rajabazaar and Angribaug which continued to remain calm but tense this evening. "Some anti-social elements indulged in setting ablaze shops and vehicles in the locality", Mr Bharambe told the media. "Seven companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and one company of riot control police have now been deployed there", Bharambe said. The youths from different groups burned some shops and also attacking each other with some pelting stones. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has condemned the situation and Minister of State for Home Deepak Kesarkar has left to visit the area, to survey the damage done to the people and the physical property.
