Korea promised booming future if it denuclearises

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shakes hands with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

Donald Trump's face-to-face with Kim Jong Un will mark a historic milestone in relations between Washington and Pyongyang - and cap a stunning about-face for the mercurial leaders who months ago were trading threats and insults.

John Bolton, Trump's national security adviser, said that the dismantling of Libya's nuclear program in 2003 might serve as a model.

"If that happens, it could give North Korea an opportunity to try to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington", said Denmark, now a director at the Wilson Center, a think tank in the United States capital.

Following the return to the United States of three U.S. citizens detained by Pyongyang, Abe said the Trump-Kim summit will lead to progress on the Japanese abduction issue.

"I think it will be a big success", Trump said. The city-state, under pressure from the US and a leaked United Nations report, officially cut off trade relations with North Korea in 2017 to abide by sanctions.

It's all a sharp contrast to his play-it-safe predecessor.

"But we got, up front, our people home".

A new CNN poll shows that after rattling the nation and the world a year ago by threatening to wipe North Korea off the map, his turn to diplomacy is winning increasing public approval.

Not all of Trump's attention-grabbing gambits have worked - and the potential risks going forward are daunting. You see nuclear-armed Israel effectively joining in as a member of an anti-Iran coalition.

Critics say Trump sometimes focuses on bold gestures first - and fallout later.

Tensions on and around the peninsula had been mounting for years as Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes saw it subjected to multiple rounds of increasingly strict sanctions by the UN Security Council, the US, EU, South Korea and others. That means Trump's stewardship of the nuclear crisis is now far more popular than the President himself, the network said.

The current whirlwind of diplomacy and negotiations will not end with "a honest and complete disarmament" but with "a reduced North Korean nuclear threat", said Thae Yong-ho, who fled his post as the North's deputy ambassador to Britain in August 2016.

Hours after Trump announced the location and date of what is being billed as the historic US-N Korea summit, the White House cautioned against any new provocative behaviour by Pyongyang. He will also try to benefit from Trump's talk of bringing peace to the Koreas.

The North said it plans to invite journalists from the United States, South Korea, China, Russia and Britain to inspect the process.

Tony Kim, 59, an accountant, and Kim Hak-song, an agricultural consultant, were affiliated with Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and both were detained after President Trump took office previous year.

Some Republicans have suggested his efforts should bring him the Nobel Peace Prize, an idea Trump clearly savored at a recent rally in MI when the crowd chanted "Nobel". Seoul's Unification Ministry has said it hopes to solve the abductees issue through future inter-Korean talks and global efforts, but has not announced specific plans. It's the main thing. "So, I don't want to get ahead of anything more specific".

You can't make a deal just because you're thinking it's going to be good for your legacy.

Trump appears to have embraced the "Great Man" theory of history, believing that individuals more than circumstances or trends alter the course of events.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter visited after leaving office, multiple rounds of non-proliferation talks have taken place, and a deal was even signed in 1994.
