Margot Kidder dead: Superman actress who played Lois Lane dies aged 69

Margot Kidder

Margot was best known for starring in Superman opposite Christopher Reeve, who died back in 2004.

The news came from the Franzen-Davis funeral home in Livingston, Montana.

Speaking with the website Hey U Guys in 2016, Kidder said her natural chemistry with Reeve was a result of coming from similar backgrounds and sharing a sibling-like affection for each other. She went on to play Lois in the films' sequels, Superman II in 1980, Superman III in 1983 and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace in 1987.

Kidder was also a strong advocate for mental health, suffering from bipolarism. She has one daughter, Maggie McGuane, and two grandchildren. "You will be missed". "Who's got you?!" when she first encountered the costumed hero as she and a helicopter plunged from the top of a Metropolis building.

The star's career began in the 1960s, where she appeared in low-budget Canadian films and other television series.

Yet it was winning the role of Lois Lane that cemented her position in pop culture.

Margot attended John's rallies, never presenting herself as a once-icon actress, but instead someone keenly interested in social causes, who was simply there to help her brother. It hit the stratosphere six years later, when she appeared as Lois Lane in the launching of the Superman film franchise.

And, she told HeyUGuys, "I think there was a cynical decision on the part of the studios, which are now owned by multi-national conglomerates just like everything else on the planet".

Hollywood soon beckoned and a move to Los Angeles led to roles on TV shows including "McQueen", "Mod Squad" and "Nichols".

The brunette beauty from Canada was best known for playing Lois Lane in four Superman movies with Christopher Reeve in the Seventies and Eighties.

She also dated former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau, the film director Steven Spielberg, and the comedian Richard Pryor.

In 1996, Kidder made headlines when she was placed in psychiatric care following a severe mental health lapse that found her disheveled and hiding in a neighbor's yard.
