Hawaii's Kilauea volcano: Power plant wells plugged, blue flames in suburban street

Man hit by flying molten rock hospitalized

Stovall said lava spatter from one of the vents was forming a wall that was helping protect a nearby geothermal plant. "This activity has destroyed the former Hawaii Geothermal Project site", it said referring to the warehouse.

Lava from a Kilauea volcano fissure flows past trees downed by lava, as it flows toward the Pacific Ocean, on Hawaii's Big Island, on Monday, May 21, near Pahoa, Hawaii.

Workers are capping the 11th and last well at the plant to prevent toxic gases from wafting out after lava entered, then stalled, on the property near one of the new volcanic vents. The plant harnesses heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power.

Earlier this month officials removed a flammable gas called pentane from the plant to reduce the chance of explosions.

As lava continues to spew from Kilauea in Hawaii, the glow of the volcano over the course of a night was caught in a time-lapse video.

As of this date, there have been two significant eruptions at the summit that released ash and sulfur dioxide thousands of feet into the atmosphere.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Mike Poland says there are near continuous low-level ash emissions from the summit.

Experts say - this pattern is similar to the eruptions in 1955 and 1960, which happened in the same general area of lower Puna.

She says volumes of the gas spiked when the vents began gushing more lava and rivers of molten rock started streaming toward the ocean over the weekend.

The air, especially in the southern part of the island, is increasingly risky.

Kilauea rumbled back to life on May 3 as it began extruding lava and sulphur dioxide emissions through a series of fissures, marking the latest phase of an eruption cycle that has continued almost non-stop for 35 years. Laze plumes travel with the wind and can shift directions without warning, the county civil defense agency said.

Residents have been concerned about hazards if lava flowed over the plant's facilities or if the molten rock heated chemicals at the plant. Lava has burned and buried more than a dozen homes in the community, and 1,700 people have fled. The remarkable footage was taken May 22 in the vicinity of the Puna Geothermal Venture, a plant that brings steam to the surface by way of several underground wells.
