Trump son-in-law Kushner gets top-level security clearance restored

White House adviser Jared Kushner speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington. Kushner Presiden

Mr. Kushner's F.B.I. background checks had dragged on for a year.

That hurdle caused part of the delay in finalizing Kushner's clearance, the official said Wednesday.

In a statement, Lowell also revealed that Kushner had sat with special counsel Robert Mueller for a second time. But The Washington Post reported that he had secured a permanent clearance.

Lowell continued to sidestep the question of whether Kushner was a target, subject, or witness, saying, "Nobody has indicated they have any intention of saying to him, you've done something wrong that would merit any charges".

The president's son-in-law had his temporary clearance revoked in February as the White House changed its security procedures.

The FBI has now finished their file on Kushner and delivered it to the White House personnel security office, according to Fox News. But attorney Edward MacMahon, who specializes in national security matters, suggested that the FBI would not have signed off on such a clearance if Kushner was a target of a ongoing criminal investigation.

Kushner was first interviewed in November, when the focus was mainly on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Kushner has had two interview sessions with the special counsel's team.

Zaid said he presumed Kushner received a permanent top-secret clearance with access to secure compartmented information (SCI) - the clearance usually needed to review the highly classified intelligence presented each day in the president's daily brief.

Initially, Kushner did not list his foreign contacts on the form, though he submitted an addendum indicating he was willing to detail them. "In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigations".

As one of Trump's closest advisers, Kushner has been a key figure in the special counsel investigation into suspected Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The White House has sought to portray the FBI's plodding pace as an ordinary situation endemic to any new government official with longstanding financial entanglements.
