Danica Patrick crashes out of final race at Indianapolis 500

Indy 500: Start time, TV channel and live stream

Alexander Rossi drives by Danica Patrick as she hits the wall in the second turn during the running of the Indianapolis 500 auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in Indianapolis Sunday, May 27, 2018.

Power is considered by many to be the best IndyCar driver now competing. I had a lot of good fortune here and did still have some this month. The Chevys were the fastest cars in the field and Team Penske had four strong chances to win.

Danica Patrick trudged out of the infield care center with her head down, mirrored sunglasses covering the disappointment in her eyes. I think we channeled our inner Pocono there. That led to a series of varied pit strategies and a long list of race leaders, 15 in all via 30 lead changes, many of those coming during pit stops, when teams were employing their chosen strategies, be they fewer pit stops, staggered pit stops or fuel-saving measures.

Among other drivers who exited due to mishaps were three-time victor Helio Castroneves (lap 147) and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan (188).

"Sure, we get a little bit of old couple's syndrome; we get under each other's skin sometimes, but the coolest thing is we're always honest with each other, don't leave anything unsaid", he offered.

Castroneves was running near the front before his crash.

Defending champion Takuma Sato also crashed out after running into the back of James Davison's vehicle. If I win, people will remember that.

Power hits the finish line for victory.

"He and I love racing together". She had her best finish of third in the race in 2009.

Announcing last November that she would retire, Patrick planned to bring down the curtain on her career with the "Danica double", contesting the Daytona and Indy 500s. The popular Brazilian has been chasing Rick Mears, A.J. Foyt and Al Unser Sr.in the record books and even though Penske moved him to sports cars this year, Castroneves was given a seat for Indy.

"I honestly was beginning to believe I was never going to win this race", he admitted amid the victory lane celebration. "It just seemed to come around and seemed pretty late off the corner". She finished 30th, her worst career finish at this race and only her second time out of the top 10.

Patrick, 36, had those same thoughts as she returned to Indianapolis after her 2005 debut at the track that sparked her career. Kanaan led at least one lap in his 14th Indy 500 to break a record he had shared with four-time race victor A.J. Foyt.
