S. Korea: Kim commits to summit with Trump, denuclearization

US officials travel to North Korea to prepare for summit despite uncertainty

The North has previously used the term to demand the United States pull out its 28,500 troops in South Korea and withdraw its so-called "nuclear umbrella" security commitment to South Korea and Japan.

"With South Korea and China already talking to the North, it's hard for Trump to reignite his campaign at this point or after the summit fails", said Namkoong Young, who has advised South Korea's Unification Ministry and the Foreign Ministry on policy for nearly 10 years.

While Trump's summit cancellation caused anxiety for US ally South Korea, Seoul is expected to keep enforcing existing sanctions.

On Thursday, the White House released Trump's letter informing Kim that he was canceling their meeting in Singapore scheduled for June 12.

But after a magnanimous statement from North Korea on Friday, which said Kim still hoped to meet Trump "at any time", the summit appears on again. "It's moving along very nicely".

"We're looking at June 12 in Singapore". During Saturday's inter-Korean summit, the Korean leaders agreed to "positively cooperate with each other as ever to improve (North Korea)-U.S. relations and establish (a) mechanism for permanent and durable peace".

While maintaining that Kim is committed to denuclearization, Moon acknowledged Pyongyang and Washington may have differing expectations of what that means and he urged both sides to hold working-level talks to resolve their differences.

He said: "Even though they share the same resolve, there need to be discussions regarding the roadmap for how to make it happen, and that process could be tough". The Trump-Kim summit hit a snag after North Korea lambasted Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser John Bolton for suggesting it give up its nuclear weapons before receiving anything in return - the so-called Libya model.

In April, Trump had stunned the world by accepting an invitation to meet Kim in an unprecedented sit-down. Washington has made it clear it wants to see the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation" of the North.

Following an unusually provocative 2017 in which his engineers tested a purported thermonuclear warhead and three long-range missiles theoretically capable of striking mainland USA cities, Kim has engaged in a flurry of diplomatic activity in recent months.

Moon and Kim agreed at a surprise second meeting Saturday that a possible North Korea-U.S. summit, now planned for June 12 in Singapore, must be held successfully, Moon told a news conference in Seoul. The North criticized the South for carrying out joint U.S.

May 25 (Korean time): Kim Kye Kwan's statement comes out in a calmer tone: "We would like to make known to the USA side once again that we have the intent to sit with the USA side to solve the problem regardless of ways at any time".

Moon and Kim held a surprise summit meeting on the North's side of Panmunjeom on Saturday, on the request of Kim.

"A meeting was held because officials of both countries thought that meeting face-to-face would be better than a phone call", Moon said, noting that the summit was in line with previous agreements for the two leaders to meet more often. At that meeting, they declared they would work toward a nuclear-free Korean peninsula and a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War. Ahead of their first meeting last month, Kim and Moon established a hotline that they said would enable direct communication between the leaders and would be valuable to defuse crises, but it was unclear whether it was used to set up the latest meeting.
