'Solo' Is Putting Up Disappointing Numbers in Memorial Day Weekend Box Office

Ewan Mc Gregor is expected to reprise his role in the highly anticipated 'Star Wars' spinoff film about Obi Wan Kenobi

Refresh for latest...: Disney/Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story has grossed an estimated $65M in its global box office bow. For context, the last major Memorial Day new release hit was X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, which grossed $90 million in three days and $110.6 million over the full four days. "Ant-Man" arrived to $57.2 million in initial ticket sales in 2015. China, which has never shown interest in "Star Wars", went to go see "Avengers" again this weekend as receipts for "Solo" in the Middle Kingdom only amounted to $10.1 million.

"Solo" may have had in-production drama - the movie's original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, were fired over creative differences and replaced by Ron Howard - but you can't equate that with its poor box office. That is also at a budget far less than Solo, which after reshoots is speculated to be at $250 million (although some have claimed without sourcing it is upwards of $300 million).

"Memorial Day weekend needs to get its groove back after a multi-year downturn that ranked last year's frame at No. 18 all-time for the holiday and unfortunately marked the third straight year the industry did not deliver a $100 million four-day opener".

"Deadpool 2" should easily score the second slot, heading for a $42 million three-day sophomore frame and a four-day total of around $54 million.

Philip Roth's five most important books
Roth died in New York City at 10:30 p.m. local time of congestive heart failure, his literary agent Andrew Wylie said . Roth had a long relationship with British actress Claire Bloom but their five-year marriage ended in divorce in 1995.

"It is a business that is built on momentum but also one where people probably are only able to get to theatres a certain number of weeks in a row, " said Hollis.

Saturday returns for the "Star Wars" anthology film registered at just $24.6 million, amounting to a 31 percent drop from Friday's $35.8 million returns. Not to mention that people upset by a recent lack of Lando were also annoyed to learn that the character was originally meant to be the main focus of the "Master Codebreaker" subplot in Johnson's movie.

Disney has not yet confirmed the report and there is no information on release dates, cast or when in the "Star Wars" timeline the film will take place. That's plenty of breathing space. The director Rian Johnson is working on a trilogy focused on new characters. Solo also had a lower opening than 2005's Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which debuted to $108.4 million.

The magic around a Star Wars film may be fading.
