Remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto could reach Upstate NY this week

Alberto is likely to make landfall Monday between New Orleans and Destin Florida before moving into Mississippi and Alabama by Tuesday

The storm comes during the Memorial Day weekend and was expected to scramble transportation on Monday as many people return from holiday travel. Eastern Time, coming ashore at at Laguna Beach, about 15 miles est-northwest of Panama City.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kph) and was moving north at 8 miles per hour (13 kph). "This is definitely a unsafe storm", said David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Alberto is expected to continue chugging in a north-northeastward direction Saturday, followed by a slower north-northwestward motion on Sunday and Monday.

As Subtropical Storm Alberto barrels towards the Florida coast, Atlanta can expect to see heavy showers and the possibility for severe weather later Monday afternoon. A tropical storm warning remained in effect stretching from Florida's Suwannee River to the border of Alabama and Mississippi. Through Monday, it is expected to slowly migrate toward land, so the odds of rain with gusty winds will increase by Monday afternoon and evening. But forecasters said flash flooding from heavy rain was the biggest risk in many areas. Isolated tornadoes are possible through tonight across the central and northern Florida peninsula.

Alberto, the first named Atlantic storm of 2018, spun up days before the formal June 1 start of the hurricane season.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Wake, Chatham, Nash and Johnston counties and points south through 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is about to make Memorial Day 2018 a washout when it makes landfall. The storm is predicted to make landfall near Panama City or Pensacola.

Subtropical Storm Alberto weakened slightly as it neared Florida's Panhandle, where it should come ashore Monday to spread heavy rains across the southern US, potentially causing more than $1 billion in economic losses. After reaching top winds of 45 mph and spending 30 hours as a tropical storm, Arlene died.

"The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline", the NHC said, with water potentially reaching 2 to 4 feet above ground if the peak surge occurs during high tide. At night, lows will hit near 74. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in all 67 of Florida's counties on Sunday and the office of Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant issued a statement announcing that he had authorized the use of the national guard.
