'Solo: A Star Wars Story' disappoints at the box office

‘Solo’ is really struggling at the box office

A Star Wars Story now playing in theaters, I recently sat down with Alden Ehrenreich for a video interview. He plays a young Han Solo, but his performance will forever be compared to the OG Solo, Harrison Ford.

The David Leitch-directed film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.

Screening of the film "Solo: A Star Wars Story" out of competition - Red Carpet Arrivals - Cannes, France May 15, 2018.

Unfortunately, Solo hit a snag from Friday to Sunday, taking home a meager $83.3 million for a projected $101 million four-day launch, the lowest opening for the modern Star Wars movies.

On top of that, Disney would surely prefer a year-end launching pad going forward, rather than a summer bow. Each did blockbuster business and were the biggest films of their respective years (2015, 2016 and 2017).

"Solo" also opened to disappointing weekend sales in the US and Canada, a rare slip for a movie studio that has dominated the box office for nearly three years with serial-type adventures.

These opening numbers may seem stellar for most movies, but the sci-fi was eclipsed by Deadpool 2's $125 million debut last week.

Its soft start raises important questions about the health of one of Disney's most.

Does he have a day or two that he'll always remember from making Solo? Yet one of its most lucrative franchises is still a flop in the world's second-biggest cinema market. Things are looking even bleaker overseas: Hollywood Reporter reports that Solo bricked and debuted at No. 3 in China, earning a weak $10.1 million. However, the fanbase who did see Solo appears to have enjoyed the experience, giving it an "A-" as per industry WOM tracker CinemaScore (notably the previous Disney Star Wars movies have all earned an "A"). As Obi-Wan Kenobi went off to disable the tractor beam holding their ship, Luke Skywalker (acting on crucial information from R2-D2) realized Princess Leia was imprisoned on the satellite, and then concocted a plan with him and Han disguised as Stormtroopers.

Lucasfilm has a chance to not only gain back the confidence of the naysayers, but can set the stage for a triumphant run to Episode IX.

That's the silver lining Disney and Lucasfilm are counting on. "Marvel [likewise owned by Disney] has proven time and time again you can release movies year-in-and-year-out, but they are dealing with a cast of all-new characters for the most part, while sprinkling in old favorites here and there".

Thanks to Howard's dedication and hard work, the buzz for the latest Star Wars Story is real. There were new bad story choices being made. "If you have an above-quality product, the release date is a secondary concern", says Bock. As a matter of fact, no film has ever grossed more than $140 million over this particular weekend.
