Paris mayor praises Malian 'hero' for scaling building to save child

The four-year-old was filmed hanging on for his life outside an apartment on Rue Marx Dormoy on Saturday afternoon having been apparently left home alone while his father was out shopping

At the French migrant workers' hostel where "Spiderman" Mamoudou Gassama was sleeping on a floor before becoming a folk hero for saving a child, his exploits have triggered a wave of pride tinged with envy.

His act of courage took place around 8 p.m. on Saturday in Paris.

Video shows Mamoudou Gassama, 22, risking his life on Sunday as he climbed up the balconies to rescue the four-year-old who is clinging to a railing and glancing at the ground below, while horrified onlookers watched.

Speaking to media, the shy Malian said little, only that he had enjoyed his visit and seen some things which interested him.

"I replied that his heroic gesture was an example for all citizens and that the City of Paris will obviously be keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France", Hidalgo said.

The daring rescue by Gassama has been circulating all weekend since the incident occurred with many dubbing the Malian migrant the Spider-Man of Paris.

"His behaviour constitutes an offence, failing to honour parental responsibilities, which carries a possible sentence of two years in jail", Molins said.

According to Molins, the toddler was being looked after by his father in Paris while his mother was living on Reunion Island, a French-administered territory in the Indian Ocean.

The Trump and Kim show - Singapore summit is on, for now
During a campaign rally in Atlanta in June 2016, Trump said he would want to talk nukes with Kim over burgers and fries. Others have noted that 6.3 million North Koreans serve in the country's reserve forces.

Gassama said he was just walking by when he saw a crowd gathered in front of the building.

"I ran. I crossed the street to save him", the Associated Press reports Gassama told Macron.

Macron urged Gassama to put in his request for nationalization papers, promising he would be naturalized into the country.

Sorry Tom Holland, but I think you've been usurped.

Two weeks later - after six years of struggling to secure legal residency in France - Mr Bathily was given a medal and a French passport by then President François Hollande. "I enjoyed talking with him today by phone, to thank him warmly", wrote Hidalgo.

Speaking to reporters, Gassama said he had acted without thinking.

"Luckily, there was someone who was physically fit and who had the courage to go and get the child", a fire service spokesman told AFP.

The special treatment for Gassama comes as authorities prepare to evacuate some 2400 migrants in makeshift encampments in the French capital, the subject of a heated debate between the Paris mayor, who wants to ensure the uprooted will be sheltered, and Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, who was present at the Elysee.
