Zidane departs as the second most successful coach in Real Madrid history

TWITTER

Zidane has won the Champions League four times at Real Madrid - three times as manager and once as a player.

He is quitting in spectacular fashion as he has now won the La Liga championship, two FIFA Club World Cups, and three Champions League titles.

Club president Florentino Perez said Zidane's decision was "unexpected".

"I am doing this for the good of this team, for this club", Zidane explained in a hastily arranged press conference at Madrid's Valdebebas training ground.

He added: "It's a unusual moment to do so, I know, but an important one too. It's a club I love and I love the president too, he brought me to this huge club and I will always be grateful, but I think a change is needed so I will not be here next season".

"When he says he's taken a decision though, we have to accept it". His departure comes less than a week after his team defeated Liverpool in the Champions League final in Kiev. "I'm not going to get involved in these things", he said when asked about a possible successor.

"Zidane wanted to make his own choice, before someone else would have been chosen in his place", Capello said to Sky Italia.

"This is "until soon" as I have no doubt that you will be back".

"I want to thank him for his commitment, his passion, his love, everything he has done for Real Madrid". I am not exhausted of coaching, after three years. I'm not looking for another team.

The 45-year-old was believed to be under contract with Real until 2020 but a poor campaign in the league appears to have ended his fairytale at the club where he played as a midfielder for five years.

It does not seem as though Zidane was exhausted by the task of managing a high-profile club like Real Madrid.

Zinedine Zidane today shocked the world by announcing he was stepping down as manager of Real Madrid and the favourite to take the position is former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. All I want to do is remind him that this club is his home and family'.
