Facebook sinking fast among U.S. teens

At the time, Facebook was heralded as the most popular social media platform in the country.

Facebook has been dethroned and is no longer the social media platform of choice for users between the ages of 13-17, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Not as they used to. Alphabet Inc.'s YouTube is the most popular, used by 85 percent of teens, according to Pew.

As Slate points out, much has changed since Pew's previous study on the same matter. In 2015, Facebook was still most popular among teens, garnering 71 percent of the 13-17 audience, more than any other social network. YouTube wasn't even in that top, and one could easily argue that YouTube isn't really a social network, albeit it does bring a social element to the table. Instagram is used by 72 percent of teenagers, and Snapchat by 69 percent. The organization found that Facebook ranks in the fourth popularity slot among teens, falling behind Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube. Instagram and Facebook scored 15% and 10%, respectively.

Facebook appears to be heading for a similar fate as Yahoo! because it is hurtling towards irrelevance among teens, new data from Pew Research Center reveals. "At the same time we've seen this shift, teens are more digitally connected than ever". Pew found that 45 percent of teens were neutral about social media's presence in their lives, while 31 percent called it positive, and 24 said it is negative.

The numbers show a major shift in teens' social media use. Only 24 per cent said it has mostly a negative impact, while 31per cent said it's mostly positive.

But Daniel Ives, chief strategy officer and head of technology research at GBH Insights, argues Facebook-owned Instagram-owned is more important to the parent company than Facebook itself when it comes to younger users.

The Pew study, which surveyed almost 750 teens in one month earlier this year, found that the increase in smartphone ownership played a huge part in teen life.
