Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens Resigns Amid Sex Scandal

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens to resign following months of scandal

"The last few months have been incredibly hard for me, for my family, for my team, for my friends and for many, many people", Greitens said in a speech on Tuesday, announcing that he will resign as of Friday at 5 p.m. They soon expanded to include questions about whether he had violated campaign-finance laws.

In a brief and defiant statement Tuesday at the governor's office, Greitens said his resignation would be effective on Friday at 5 p.m.

"The last few months have been incredibly hard, for me, for my family, for my team, for my friends and for many, many people that I love", he said, adding that he had not broken any laws or committed any crimes.

Greitens was under investigation in the Republican-controlled Missouri Legislature, and he faced a serious threat of impeachment. Claire McCaskill in a state won handily by President Donald Trump.

Gardner said Wednesday that she can't comment on what Baker will do.

"The consequences Mr. Greitens has suffered he brought upon himself by his actions, his statements, his decisions, his ambition and pursuit for power", Gardner said. Greitens has denied the criminal accusations, although he has acknowledged a consensual relationship with the woman. But a report from a House committee created a firestorm, with both Republicans and Democrats calling for his resignation.

Trump wants to bar German luxury cars in US
The Trump administration has opened a trade investigation into whether vehicle imports have damaged the US auto industry. The European Union imposes a 10 percent tariff on cars imported from the U.S.

Fellow Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Parson - a former state lawmaker and sheriff - is to serve the remainder of Greitens' term, which runs until January 2021. Missouri has been blessed with an unbroken line of men and women in public service who have worked to make our state better, and the work of the many dedicated public servants, who work tirelessly for the people of Missouri, will continue.

Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner will dismiss a felony computer-tampering charge against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens as part of an agreement reached with his attorneys, Gardner announced Wednesday. State Senate Democratic leader Gina Walsh said Greitens still needed to answer for the scandals. The House authorized the legislative investigation a week after the indictment.

Also on Tuesday, an ex-Greitens adviser told a state House investigative panel that the governor's election campaign had considered illegally soliciting donations from foreign nationals, reports the St Louis Post-Dispatch. Federal law bars 501 (c)(3) charities such as The Mission Continues from intervening in political campaigns on behalf of candidates. The AP reported that Greitens raised about $2 million from those who had previously given significant amounts to the charity. One of the open stipulations states that Greitens has agreed to release Gardner and everyone in her office from civil liability. According to the Kansas City Star, the group shares the same building as Greitens' campaign committee and there is an overlap in staff. That resulted in a felony invasion of privacy charge against Greitens in February.

In the computer tampering case stemming from questionable fundraising activities, Greitens offered to leave office if Gardner would dismiss the charge, prosecutor's spokeswoman Susan Ryan said.

He then coerced her into oral sex, she said, testifying that she was still crying and felt she had no other choice if she were going to get out of the basement. The committee finds her testimony credible.
