China's Commerce Ministry: China will reserve rights to release countermeasures

Gao Feng a spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce addresses reporters in Beijing

Earlier on Thursday China's commerce ministry announced that U.S.'s actions are against World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, and that it reserved the right to respond appropriately if needed.

The Trump administration's move comes ahead of US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross' planned visit to Beijing on Saturday, during which the US and China will try to hammer out a deal to forestall the imposition of proposed tariffs on US$50 billion in Chinese imports.

Pointing to a pause in the trade dispute, the administration had pointed to China's plans to "significantly increase" its purchases of USA goods and services and make "meaningful increases" in US exports of agriculture and energy products.

A day after the United States announced 25 per cent tariff on Dollars 50 billion of Chinese tech goods, China on Wednesday said that it did not want a trade war and remained undeterred.

The commerce ministry said earlier Wednesday that Beijing "has the confidence, capability and experience to defend the interests of Chinese people and the core interests of the country" - no matter what measures the United States plans to take.

On the same day, despite Hua's criticism of the United States, China's State Council declared that China will further cut import tariffs for daily consumer goods starting July 1. "China will surely take resolute and powerful steps to safeguard its legitimate rights if the US insists on acting recklessly".

"One is that what we're having with China is a trade dispute, plain and simple".

Instead of being issued with automatic maximum possible duration, visas granted to Chinese citizens may soon be limited by United States consulate officers, according to an announcement by the U.S. State Department on Tuesday.

In the latest blow from the country that is supposed to be their closest friend, the EU, Canada and Mexico found themselves hit yesterday by punishing U.S. tariffs on steel aluminium imports.

Another round of trade talks between the USA and China will resume this weekend.

The relationship between Navarro and Mnuchin appears to have been souring for a while over U.S.

"Chinese exports to the U.S.in value added terms is less than 3 percent of their economy now", he said.

Now, the U.S.is turning to Beijing and to a standoff that has taken some confusing turns.

"China's attitude, as always, is: we do not want to fight, but we are also not afraid to fight", it said in a commentary.

A source at an global trading house based in China said enquiries about USA agricultural products have increased, but buyers are still nervous.
