Kim says committed to denuclearisation of Korean peninsula

Friday's meeting at the White House was the latest development in a flurry of diplomatic activity that kicked into high gear after Trump abruptly cancelled the planned summit with Kim on May 24.

Before being delivered to the president, the letter was "carefully examined" by the Secret Service in order to make sure it contained nothing which was threatening to the president's physical safety.

Trump also said he viewed the Pompeo talks as a positive step, and that he "looks forward" to seeing what the letter says.

He added: 'I think they want to do that, I know they want to do that.

The White House did not immediately respond to request for comment Saturday.

While Trump sounded conciliatory toward North Korea, Kim used Cold War-style language about Washington during a televised encounter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Pyongyang on Thursday, referring to "US hegemonism".

Pompeo was in the room as Trump and Kim Yong Chol met. It could just be that's how Kim likes it.

Kim's to letter to Moon was personally delivered by Kim's sister, who attended the Olympics as a special envoy, and was covered by a blue folder emblazoned with a golden seal. The huge letter is just part of meticulous steps taken by North Korea to present Kim as a legitimate worldwide statesman who is reasonable and capable of negotiating solutions and making deals, analysts say. These kinds of displays are also what critics fear could be used as traps to appease Mr. Trump.

Activity continues with regularly changing erupting vents and flows
Geological Survey sent to Hawaii to respond to the eruption , are now working out of UH-Hilo. The lava has reportedly destroyed at least 82 structures and displaced thousands of people.

US defense and intelligence officials have repeatedly assessed the North to be on the threshold of having the capability to strike anywhere in the continental USA with a nuclear-tipped missile - a capacity that Trump and other US officials have said they would not tolerate. That was the structure of previous deals, all of which collapsed after the North pocketed US concessions and cheated or reneged on its own commitments.

The US is trying to find a discreet way to pay for Kim Jong Un's hotel during the June 12 summit, which is again back on in Singapore. "I purposely didn't open the letter", Trump said.

Trump called off the summit in an open letter to Kim last week, citing "open hostility" from the regime.

The US president said he told the North Korean delegation that they could take their time.

President Trump announced Friday that his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place as originally planned on June 12 in Singapore as the start of a "process" to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons.

After the meeting, the North Korean delegates chatted with Trump on the White House lawn.

Kim hoped US-North Korean relations and denuclearisation of the peninsula "will be solved on a stage-by-stage basis" and "he hoped that the solution of the issues will progress through effective and constructive dialogue and negotiation", the report by the North Korean news agency said. "I don't see the United States spending a lot of money".
