Computex 2018: Intel introduces 8086K 40th Anniversary Edition with 5GHz boost speed

Intel is 50 years old

The Core i7-8086K will go on sale starting June 8 - which is the same day the 8086 launched 40 years ago - and Intel has announced that it will give away 8,086 units of the CPU as a way of thanking its community. The company turns 50 this year (that's a helluva lot in silicon years) and its original 8086 processor, the same one used in IBM's original PC design, is turning 40. The company says the six-core/12-thread CPU would be its first ever to reach a 5.0GHz turbo frequency without overclocking. The company has made a decision to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its 8086 processor by launching its first 5GHz desktop CPU, the aptly titled Core i7-8086K.

The original Intel 8086 processor from 1978, left, sits next to the new Intel Core i7-8086K. According to Intel, the new display technology will be able to extend battery life by 4 to 8 hours compared to traditional displays, and it's being developed in partnership with display manufacturers Sharp and Innolux.

Intel didn't announce how much the chip would cost, though the competition website lists its average retail price as $425. Intel said that this particular 28C/56T processor will be running at 5GHz, which is absolutely incredible.

AMD's current top-of-the-range Threadripper is the 1950X, offering 16 cores and 32 threads for around £800. The end result of these efforts are devices that can potentially last as long as 28 hours on a single charge, but there's no word on when we might see this tech debut in consumer products. Nearing the end of its keynote, the semi-conductor maker surprised the audience with a quick tease of its yet-unnamed 28-cores CPU.

That's a whole ten extra cores compared with Intel's current top single-socket CPU, the Core i9 7980XE, and we saw the new megacore monster chewing through Cinebench's CPU rendering package nearly faster than I could grab a quick fuzzy picture of it. We'll know those details later this year-Intel is aiming to ship the new part sometime in the fourth quarter.
