I have absolute right to pardon myself

U.S. President Donald

Republican Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley spoke out against President Donald Trump's Monday morning tweet in which he claimed that he had the "absolute right to pardon" himself if convicted in special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

It all stems from the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into alleged collusion between the Trump team and Russian officials in the election campaign that brought the president to power.

'You can't pardon yourself, ' Democratic US Representative Ted Deutch said in response to Trump on Twitter.

The letter also cited the president's pardoning authority should Trump face indictments as a result of Mueller's probe.

She replied: "Why would he need to pardon himself if he's done nothing wrong?"

Mr Trump's team and allies have waged a public relations campaign against Mr Mueller and the Justice Department to discredit the investigation and soften the impact of the special counsel's potential findings.

Moscow officials have denied allegations of interference, calling the accusations groundless and absurd. The New York Times speculated it may mean that Trump could pardon himself.

President Donald Trump on Monday said that although he had committed no wrongdoing, he has the "absolute" power to pardon himself, echoing arguments by his lawyer, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"So there it is: the president can commit any crime he wants", Colbert said.

Harvard Law School constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe called Trump's position "ludicrous" and 'legal fantasy'.

Mr Giuliani told ABC it was an "open question" whether Mr Trump would sit for an interview with Mr Mueller, but the President's lawyers were leaning against having him testify.

The HuffPost reported that Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor, made the assertion on a day when he conducted a series of interviews in which he discussed the expansive powers granted to the president in the Constitution.

Meantime, Giuliani has said before that the president's lawyers oppose Trump sitting down for an interview with Mueller.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) told CNN that while Trump is speaking in hypotheticals, "I don't think a president should pardon themselves". Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) mentioned that there's "a prevailing opinion that a President of the United States can exercise the power of pardon on himself". "If presidents had the power to pardon themselves, we'd no longer be a democracy", Schumer said.
