Del Potro sets up French Open semifinal match against Nadal

SImona Halep Roland Garros French Open

"I have no expectations, no pressure", said Halep after seeing off German 12th seed Angelique Kerber 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-2 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Halep had to come back from a break of serve down in the second set and fend off three break points at 4-4 before finally closing out the victory, which guaranteed that she will remain No. 1 in the rankings after this tournament.

She will play the Roland Garros final on Saturday against the victor of the match between Americans Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.

Muguruza had hammered Maria Sharapova in the quarter-final but Halep was a different proposition entirely - and it seemed she knew it. Muguruza hopes to make her fourth career grand slam final and her second career French Open final.

That means Saturday's final at the French Open will be Halep's third title match in the past five Grand Slam tournaments.

Sharapova and Williams were supposed to meet in the fourth round of the French Open on Monday, but Williams had to withdraw from the pair's 22nd meeting with a last-minute injury.

Muguruza settled down in the second set, moving 2-0 ahead before Halep levelled in the eighth game. "I'm excited to play a good semi-finals and it's good that it's tomorrow". You just have a feeling that the tennis gods are going to reward Halep with her first major, which is certainly overdo.

"It's always hard to play someone from your country, and such a good friend, so I'm pleased to get through that", said Stephens.

It was 5-0 by the time Muguruza eventually claimed a game.

Keys attempted to respond three games later as she began picking off the Stephens serve, however, she squandered the two break points that came her way and her profligacy was ultimately punished. "It's been a little bit longer for me to get used to it, but I feel like every year I get more comfortable".

Halep is aware she can not afford another poor start on Thursday against 24-year-old Muguruza who has been tested just once in Paris and that was in the first round where fellow former victor Svetlana Kuznetsova pushed her to a tiebreak in the first set.

But Keys, who made 23 unforced errors in the first set, hit back hard and set up a break point at 3-2, only for Stephens to save it with a service return victor. She won't hit outright winners off that explosive Muguruza serve, but she'll have a better chance of getting the serve back in play than any previous opponent.

"I lost three times until now and no one died", Halep said, "so it will be OK".

"It's really tough to get any ball by her, but especially today, she was neutralizing so well". But she failed to convert any of those, and Halep held there, before breaking at love to end it.

"I know that she's strong opponent".

There were no such fireworks this time, though, with Halep sealing a 6-7 (7-2) 6-3 6-2 victory. Her shots were very, very deep and very aggressive constantly.
