Ronaldo returns as Portugal down Algeria with Guedes brace

Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid Manchester United

The Portugal national team continues its World Cup preparation on Thursday when it takes on Algeria in an global friendly.

Ronaldo, 33, sparked speculation about his future by speaking in the past tense when discussing his time as a Madrid player after last month's Champions League final victory over Liverpool in Kiev. He also had one disallowed for offside before being substituted in the 75th minute on Thursday (Friday NZ time).

Ronaldo set up the second in the 37th minute when he sped down the left and provided a pinpoint cross which Bruno Fernandes met with a powerful downward header for his first global goal.

Bernardo Silva cleverly nodded William Carvalho's lofted pass into the path of the fast-arriving Guedes, who made no mistake with a simple low finish.

Portugal scored another goal near the end but it was called off by video review because of a hand-ball by Guedes.

It was a welcome boost for the European champions, who hadn't won since March and were held to draws by Tunisia (2-2) and Belgium (0-0) in their previous two friendlies.

Portugal open their group campaign against Spain on June 15 at Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium before matches against Morocco and Iran round off their group.

Of course a cynic would say that the noise that he wants to leave is all down to him actually wanting a new contract at the Bernabeu to get him on parity with Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Neymar moving to the Bernabeu in the future is inevitable, according to Marcelo, who linked up with his Brazil team-mate this week in London before the squad head out to Russian Federation for the World Cup.

Ronaldo will be looking to add to his 149 global caps for Portugal having scored 81 times for his country, though only three times at World Cups.
