How Liverpool Target Xherdan Shaqiri Was Blocked From Reds Move in 2014

Liverpool transfer news Mohamed Salah Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool are eyeing a shock transfer for Stoke City forward Xherdan Shaqiri, according to The Mirror.

The 26-year-old was in brilliant form this term, scoring 20 goals and providing eight assists in all competitions, so if he does move away from Anfield then Shaqiri could help ease the goalscoring burden off duo Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, knows Shaqiri from his time in the Bundesliga and is considering a bid as he looks to strengthen his squad.

The Switzerland global reportedly has a £12m relegation release clause in his contract, but Rowett insists that the Potters will not sell the 26-year-old on the cheap.

"No player will leave the club that is contractually with the club unless the club feel it is a good deal and the right deal for them".

Southampton and Tottenham are two of the clubs interested in signing Shaqiri, although neither have yet made a move.

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table to secure their continued participation in the Champions League.

Shaqiri was one of the few shining lights for a Stoke team relegated to the Championship and the former Bayern Munich man is clearly a wanted man this summer.

He continued: "We need three or four players in, but if we get that, I think we can genuinely challenge Manchester City".

Klopp is hoping to wrap up a deal for Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir in the coming weeks, but it remains to be seen if Liverpool can get a transfer across the line before the start of the World Cup next week.
