Del Potro's epic praise for French Open finalist Nadal

Rafael Nadal's French Open set streak ends in quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal, the 10-time champion, takes on Dominic Thiem in the French Open final on Sunday.

"It was a tough first set with opportunities for Juan Martin, I am fortunate that I won the first set and then I played more aggressively", Nadal, who equals Roger Federer's feat of reaching the final of a single Slam 11 times, said on court as fans chanted "Viva Espana". For me it's incredible.

So, if a player as good as Thiem is on clay is still struggling for parity with Nadal, and there is no other obvious contender to trouble him, his path to at least 13 or 14 French titles would seem to be one covered in rose petals - if he stays healthy.

"The first set was very hard, with too many chances for Juan Martin", Nadal said.

Wilander believes Thiem can worry Nadal if he is prepared to "take risks" like Diego Schwartzman did in the quarter-finals when he snapped the left-hander's run of 37 consecutive completed sets won at the French Open by snatching the opener.

The famous Nadal forehand was charged up to its full unforgiving force in the second set as it racked up point after point to earn a double break at 4-0 before Del Potro yielded with a lackluster return that landed long.

However, to get his hands on La Coupe des Mousquetaires, Thiem will have to defeat the most formidable player in the tournament's history - 10-time champion Nadal. "That's why he's the No. 1 and beating all the guys", Del Potro said.

Nadal acknowledged that Thiem has been a "very complex" opponent.

Being that far back, it's almost impossible for Nadal to consistently return the ball deep into his opponent's court, but that hasn't affected him the way traditional tennis X's and O's would suggest.

The 24-year-old Thiem, the youngest man since Nadal to reach the final in Paris, ended the contest on his first match point with a forehand victor.

Cecchinato, the world number 72, played fearlessly and used his whole arsenal of claycourt weapons, but he came up short against the only player to beat Nadal on his favourite surface this season.

"I think that was my chance of the match", del Potro said of the break points he held at 4-all in the opening set of Nadal's 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 blitz.

"If lost that tiebreak it would have been a very close match I think and I didn't want that". The No. 1 men's tennis player in the world cruised on Friday - looking vintage in domination -, who entered the French Open semis as No. 6 player in the ATP World Tour rankings.

Nadal has dropped only one set so far in reaching the final - one more than he conceded in winning the 2017 title. Cecchinato was accused of match-fixing and suspended for 18 months in 2016, but he appealed, and his punishment was dropped on a technicality.

6-1 defeat of surprise semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato ended that miserable streak, and Thiem, who has already beaten Nadal on clay this season, could now face the defending champion in the tournament decider.

Thiem weathered three set points for Cecchinato, at 7-6, 9-8 and 10-9. If not, you have the second and the third sets of today's match, it speaks for itself.

Thiem "plays very heavy topspin, very aggressive, goes for the shots, [has] fitness, condition", Moya said.

By the sixth game of the opener, Cecchinato had claimed just one point off the Austrian's serve.

"That was not a nice feeling".

"The weather, I watched a bit of footage of the (Robin) Soderling victory over Nadal here in 2009".

The Argentine won the first two points to round off the first set and outlasted his Croatian opposite in lengthy rallies to win in three hours and 50 minutes.
