Manafort Hits Back Against Mueller's Latest Charges, Revoke of Conditions

President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort arrives for a court hearing in Washington D.C. on May 2

The allegations of witness tampering relate to Manafort's criminal case in Washington where he faces charges of money-laundering conspiracy, false statements and acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukrainian interests.

The latest charges against Manafort came less than four months after his former business associate, Richard Gates III, agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. The charges are related to an effort by him, Mr. Manafort and other associates to have prominent European politicians vouch publicly for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the pro-Russia former president of Ukraine, who was Mr. Manafort's client.

Manafort and Kilimnik worked together on behalf of the former government of Ukraine, prosecutors say.

Manafort has responded to the allegations that he tampered with witness evidence.

Dems want insider trading probe over job tweet Dem senator won't return "blue slip" for two Trump court picks The Constitution, like its Framers, roundly rejects an imperial presidency MORE (R-Iowa) on Thursday, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz said that he planned to release a report about the FBI's probe into former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's emails during the 2016 election on June 14.

Paul Manafort, former campaign manager for US President Donald Trump, departs after a hearing at US District Court in Washington, DC, US, April 19, 2018. Friday's indictment does not change the counts already against him.

"Mr. Manafort's Sixth Amendment right to trial by an impartial jury in this district may have been irreparably damaged by the Special Counsel's latest, very public and very specious, filing of this motion", the filing said. His co-defendant, Rick Gates, pleaded guilty in February and agreed to co-operate with prosecutors. If he is found guilty in both cases, 69-year-old Manafort could be sent to prison for the rest of his life.

Manafort was exercising his freedom to disagree with the special counsel's legal theories, the attorneys said. He also revealed that before getting involved with Manafort and Gates in 2005, he worked for the International Republican Institute, a US-funded "democracy promotion" outfit led by Senator John McCain (R-Arizona).

Manafort is now under house arrest.

Manafort was charged Friday with conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice. The previously pending charges against Manafort of course had nothing to do with the synthetic collusion hyseteria over the 2016 election.

Kilimnik, a Russian intelligence asset, is now under the protection of Moscow and unlikely to ever see an American court room. They accused Mueller of conjuring up a "sinister plot" and said the allegations were meant to generate widespread - and intensely negative - media coverage of Manafort.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also downplayed Manafort's involvement with the campaign in a press briefing.
